(dogs, biting, safety, children)
This article offers some practical tips on how to approach dogs and how to avoid being bitten by a dog. As cute as they can be, you must remember that a dog is an animal and you can not always predict their behaviour. Whilst you don’t want to frighten your child from being around dogs, be particularly cautious around strange dogs. Obviously the best way to feel comfortable around dogs is to become a dog owner. But if that seems a little extreme try these tips:

How to avoid dog bites

  • Always try to let the dog see and sniff you first before patting the dog.
  • Try not to pat a dog that is sleeping. They may be startled and react.
  • Always be cautious around dogs you do not know. It is best to assume that they are also wary of you.
  • Try not to pat a dog while they are eating. They may think you are trying to take their food and attack.
  • Avoid approaching too close or patting a mother dog with her litter of puppies.

What to do if a dog attacks you

  • If a dog does attack, try to give it your jacket, handbag, or anything that you can put between yourself and the dog.
  • Remain motionless, hands at your sides, and avoid eye contact with the dog. Never scream and run.
  • When the dog has lost interest in you, slowly back away.
  • If you are knocked down try to curl up into a ball with your hands over your face
